Career Quest ~ 2012

Whiteside Area Career Center hosted almost 1,200 eighth graders from 17 local middle schools at our annual Career Quest on May 3rd and 4th.

Career Quest is a showcase of WACC programs for eighth grade students. The WACC students act as tour guides for the eighth graders, escorting them through the building. Other WACC students demonstrate what goes on here. The kids saw cars being repaired, machining, welding, photography and television studios, a preschool, a commercial kitchen, computers, a health lab, and a criminal justice scenario.

Mr. Winger worked very hard to organize this year’s Career Quest. We could not have done this without our student volunteers. Thank you, students!

Kiddie Kampus Graduation

The Early Childhood Education students said good-bye to their 4 and 5 year old pre-school class today.

Parents and grandparents visited the Kiddie Kampus Pre-School for a graduation ceremony. Mrs. Mekeel presented each pre-school student with a special award. The high school students then presented the pre-schoolers with personalized memory books that they made for the kids.

We wish our Kiddie Kampus pre-schoolers good luck in kindergarten!

Allied Health Field Trip

Thirty-six students attended the Healthcare Career Fair located at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois on Friday, April 27, 2012. The Fair was hosted by the college, Rockford Memorial, SwedishAmerican and St. Anthony Hospitals. Students had the opportunity to explore careers in the medical field including nursing, sports medicine, dental hygiene, radiology, laboratory, rehab services, surgical technology, respiratory care, health information management, pharmacy, and EMS. Staff and students manned the booths and offered education on their career areas and a variety of activities such as taking a blood pressures, working with a laparascope, participating in a “code blue”, delivering a baby, watching slide presentations, and tasting thickened liquids to name a few. The WACC students then ate lunch at the Golden Corral Buffet, before boarding the bus and arrived safely back at WACC right on schedule at 3:30. Thanks to all the students for being very well behaved and appreciative of their field trip. ECE Art Project

The Early Childhood Education students have been busy this week making grassheads.

Grassheads are made by filling nylon stockings with vermiculite and grass seed. The students then decorate the “head” with paint, baubles, and googly eyes to make it look like a face. The grasshead will sit in a jar of water. The water will move up the tail to the seeds in the head and become grass “hair.”

Health Occupations Creates Cells

Nucleus. Centriole. Membrane. Filaments. Mitochondria. These are all parts of a cell.

Pasta. Cake. Ribbon. Glitter. Paint. These are all things the Health Occupations students used to create models of cells.

Their models show the components that make up a cell, and explain the function that each one performs. Great work, students!
